VTuber Setup on a Budget: Everything You Need to Start

You don't need a $3k rig to start VTubing. Here's the complete budget-friendly setup — model rigging, tracking software, OBS scenes, and the gear that actually matters.

VTubing exploded and it's not slowing down. But scrolling through setup guides that recommend $2,000 tracking rigs and custom Live2D commissions can make it feel out of reach. It doesn't have to be.

Here's everything you need to start VTubing without emptying your wallet.

The Model: Where to Start

You have three tiers:

  • Free/cheap PNG tubers ($0-30) — Use apps like PNGTuber Plus or Veadotube Mini. You just need a static image with a few expression variants. Commission one on Fiverr or draw your own.
  • Pre-made Live2D models ($30-150) — Sites like Booth.pm and Nizima have pre-rigged Live2D models ready to use. Filter by price and style.
  • Custom Live2D ($300-800+) — If you want something unique. Artists on Twitter/X and Skeb take commissions, but expect 4-8 week turnaround.

For starting out, a pre-made model is the sweet spot. You get proper lip sync and expressions without the custom commission price.

Tracking Software

  • VTube Studio (free with watermark, $25 to remove) — The industry standard for Live2D. Works with phone camera or webcam for face tracking.
  • VSeeFace (free) — Great for 3D models. Uses MediaPipe face tracking through your webcam.
  • iPhone users — Your Face ID camera is actually one of the best tracking inputs. VTube Studio's iOS app sends tracking data to your PC over WiFi.

You do NOT need a dedicated tracking camera. Your laptop webcam or phone works fine.

OBS Setup for VTubers

The key settings:

  1. Game Capture as your base layer
  2. VTube Studio as a Window Capture on top, with chroma key or transparent background
  3. Alerts and chat overlaid on top of everything
  4. Set your VTuber window to always on top so it stays visible

Pro tip: Use OBS's "Window Capture" with VTube Studio's transparent background option instead of chroma key. Cleaner edges, no green spill.

Audio Matters More Than Video

Viewers will tolerate a mid-looking model. They won't tolerate bad audio. Budget priorities:

  1. USB microphone ($50-80) — The Fifine K669 or Samson Q2U are solid budget picks
  2. Pop filter ($8) — Kills plosives
  3. Noise gate in OBS (free) — Filters out keyboard clicks and background noise

The Minimum Viable Setup

Total cost to start VTubing properly:

  • Pre-made Live2D model: ~$50
  • VTube Studio (phone tracking): $25
  • USB mic: $60
  • OBS (free), alerts (free)

Total: ~$135. That's it. You can upgrade everything later.
